Kaluharage Dasun De Silva

I think the red envelope is a big symbol of the Chinese New Year. The red shows feeling lucky and good and the money represents good fortune. Also, the act of giving and receiving reminds us to share not just our material but also our time with others.

During Spring Festival, lanterns and red paper on everyone’s door are the most common things that any foreigner can notice everywhere catching everyone's attention. Besides that, I think Red Packets on shops also give the new year environment.

The Chinese New Year remains the most important occasion for generations of families to reunite and spend time together. Hence the New Year’s Eve reunion dinner is one of the most important items. The families eat together on one big table with lucky foods such as fish, dumplings, spring rolls prepared and eaten in a special way containing meanings and blessings for the new year. I think it’s amazing!!

I heard so many interesting things about the Spring Festival prior to coming to China. But none of the things I heard can be compared to what I actually witnessed. Streets filled with red lanterns, couplet scrolls hanging on every house door, fireworks going off, varied delicious dishes. You can literally feel the buzz in the atmosphere. It’s just amazing!

Before coming to China, I heard that New Year was mostly about spending time with your family. Therefore, since international students don't have any family in China, I appreciated it a lot when ZIBS organized a New Year dinner. With good food, a cozy place and three games, it was a fun and social evening which was a perfect replacement for New Year with family.

Chinese New Year was a celebration far away from my culture. Previously, I only knew about the red packets and the commonly said phrase “新年快乐.” However, upon coming to China and participating in the ZIBS Chinese New Year Party has allowed me to get an insight into what Chinese New Year is about. The activities held, such as the Chinese New Year quiz, the couplets race, and trivia, allowed me to experience the Chinese New Year spirits with the ZIBS family. Although it was my first new year away from my family, getting together with the ZIBS students and faculty truly made ZIBS my second home!

Q3

你认为本国新年和中国春节最大的不同点在哪里?为什么?

In my country, we do celebrate Chinese New Year, but not as long period as China does. For e.g., in China, people celebrate Chinese New Year since Preliminary Eve (小年)but in Malaysia, we only start the celebration on the New Year‘s Eve(除夕). And also, there are many decorations available on every China’s street, which is amazing because in my country only some specific Chinese areas have the Chinese new year decorations. The China’s one makes me blend more into the Chinese New Year vibes.

For me, Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year's differences start in the animal which represents the year. For Chinese New Year, it is the rabbit but for us in Vietnam, it is the cat. Another difference is in that in China, the pilea/adeniums is the symbol plant, in Vietnam it was peach blossom tree in the north and apricot tree in the echinacea. Last but not least, the holiday in China is celebrated more heavily after the New Year begins, while in Vietnam, we celebrate early and also comeback to work sooner. I am still very much enjoying the holiday and hope that I will learn more about China in general during this holiday season.

Although we celebrate the Lunar New Year like in China, in Vietnam there still are many unique customs that make Tết (the name of the Lunar Spring Festival in Vietnamese) the most important holiday of the year. In order to have a smooth and lucky new beginning, Vietnamese people start prepare for Tet 10 days before New Year's Eve, such as going shopping for Tết with traditional fruits and jams, seeing the Kitchen Gods returning to heaven on the 23rd day of the 12th in lunar month. According to a Vietnamese folktale, the Kitchen Gods will tell the Jade Emperor about the business and gestures of each family on earth. Hence, the custom of worshiping the Kitchen Gods has the meaning of praying for the fullness and prosperity of all family members. After the Kitchen Gods go to Heaven, families will tidy and decorate their houses to usher in the New Year as they believe that a clean house represents a fresh start. Moreover, one of the most obvious differences in the New Year culture of the two countries is that, in the Vietnamese version of the 12 zodiac animals, we do not celebrate the year of the Rabbit, but the Cat instead. But no matter how different, I believe that Lunar New Year is still a day of family and reunion. Together, we wish for a new year of peace and prosperity(万事如意,国泰民安).

For the Spring Festival there is an event that’s organized in the RC1, we will wrap dumplings and I am looking forward to it because I have never celebrated Chinese New Year before. Although I am a bit sad to not be able to come back home for the holidays, it has allowed me to meet more international students and have a lot of fun in China.

Instead of going back to my home-country, I plan to travel around China with my friends on this winter vacation. We would like to experience China by visiting new places and trying various local dishes. As for the Spring Festival, my friends and I plan to cook and have dinner together to celebrate the new year.

I'm so glad to be able to celebrate Spring Festival this year in China and learn how Chinese friends spend their vacation together with their families. It's also the liveliest time of the year to go travel and hang out with friends. There are many fun activities for foreigners to enjoy during this season. We have been to a lot of mountains and caves around the beautiful city of Hangzhou. I plan to join the ZIBS event to learn more about Chinese customs and dine together with other ZIBSers to welcome the Year of the Rabbit and pray for good things to come. Looking forward to many more exciting things for our next semester!

As the Year of the Tiger draws to an end, let's reflect on our collective challenges, achievements and learnings, feeling grateful for how far we all have come. Friends and families throughout China and the world come together for this very important festival, transitioning from winter, welcoming the spring. In this very spirit of togetherness, wishing all the ZIBSers- old and new who will be joining us in the Year of the Rabbit- a very happy and prosperous 2023!!

兔年快乐! #StrongerTogether
